Every Matter-compatible smart lock compared (2026)

Every Matter-compatible smart lock compared (2026)

Published 8 May 2026

 How to read this guide

There are about 30 Matter-compatible smart locks on the market in 2026. Most "best smart lock" lists rank them in one big pile, which is useless — a lock that fits a European Euro-profile door physically cannot fit a North American deadbolt door, and vice versa.

So this guide is organized by the only filter that matters first: what kind of door do you have?

  • Euro profile cylinder doors (most of Europe): the lock retrofits over your existing key cylinder from the inside. You keep using your physical key from the outside.
  • US/Canadian deadbolt doors: the lock replaces the entire deadbolt mechanism. Some retrofit (keep the existing key); some are full replacements.

Then within each group, the deciders are: radio type (Thread vs Wi-Fi), unlock methods (keypad, fingerprint, Apple Home Key, auto-unlock), and price.

All prices below are USD list prices on Amazon at time of writing. Local pricing varies considerably.

For European doors (Euro profile cylinder)

This is a small but high-quality category, and it's where retrofit locks make the most sense — you keep your existing physical key from the outside, and the smart lock turns the cylinder from the inside. Two brands dominate: Nuki and SwitchBot.

Nuki Smart Lock Ultra — $359

The premium option. Matter over Wi-Fi (plus Bluetooth), works with Apple Home / Google / Alexa / SmartThings, auto-unlock via geofencing or Bluetooth proximity, ships with its own security cylinder. Easy DIY install — about 15 minutes with no drilling. The Ultra is the newest generation, smaller than previous Nuki locks and quieter.

Buy if: you want the cleanest premium experience, are willing to pay for it, and like that Nuki is a European company with strong privacy practices and good firmware support.

Nuki Smart Lock (standard) — $159

Same brand, same ecosystem, much cheaper. Wi-Fi + Bluetooth + Matter, auto-unlock, app control, remote access. You're giving up some refinement, the integrated cylinder, and a bit of size — but functionally it does the same job.

Buy if: you want a Nuki at less than half the price of the Ultra and don't care about the polish.

SwitchBot Lock Pro (Matter Enabled) — ~$120

The value pick. Matter over Wi-Fi, no hub required for Matter (works directly with Apple Home, Google, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant). Retrofits over your existing cylinder — compatible with Euro profile, UK oval, Swiss round, and knob cylinders. Dual rechargeable battery system so you swap one while the other keeps the lock running. IP65 weatherproof.

Add the SwitchBot Keypad Touch or Keypad Vision separately for fingerprint, NFC, passcode, or facial recognition unlock from the outside.

Buy if: you want Matter + Euro-profile retrofit at roughly a third of the Nuki Ultra's price and don't mind sourcing the keypad as a separate accessory.

SwitchBot Lock Ultra — ~$170

The newer, slimmer SwitchBot. 50% slimmer body than Lock Pro, magnetic quick-release, +122% faster unlock motor (claimed), and an EU-specific variant with night-latch support for European-style doors. Requires the SwitchBot Hub Mini Matter Enabled to bridge into Matter (unlike the Lock Pro Matter Enabled, which has Matter built in directly).

Combined with the Keypad Vision Pro (3D face + palm vein recognition), this becomes the most feature-rich Matter Euro-profile lock available — fingerprint, face, palm, NFC, passcode, Apple Watch.

Buy if: you want the slimmest, fastest Euro-profile retrofit lock, you're fine with a SwitchBot Hub in the picture for Matter, and you want the maximum unlock-method variety.

Nuki Keypad 2 NFC — $179 (accessory)

Not a lock on its own — this is an outdoor keypad/fingerprint/NFC reader that pairs with any Nuki Smart Lock. Supports Apple Home Key (tap your iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock), NFC tags, fingerprint, and 6-digit codes. Matter-enabled over Bluetooth.

Buy if: you already have a Nuki and want keyless entry from the outside without giving guests a physical key.

What's missing in Europe

The two-brand dominance (Nuki + SwitchBot) covers most use cases, but the category is still maturing. Aqara has been promising European Euro-profile variants of their U-series locks but availability is inconsistent in 2026. Yale's European Matter rollout is also slower than its US one. For now, Nuki and SwitchBot are the answer.

For US/Canadian deadbolt doors

This is where the variety is. Roughly twenty options, with meaningful differences. Below, grouped by what makes each one distinctive.

The hidden retrofits: keep your existing key & hardware

These locks install on the inside of your door and turn your existing deadbolt. From the outside, your door looks unchanged — same key, same hardware. Best for renters, historic homes, or anyone who hates the bulky "smart lock look."

Level Bolt (Matter) — $199

The original hidden retrofit. Matter over Thread, Apple Home / Google / Alexa / SmartThings. No keypad — unlock is via app, auto-unlock, or your physical key. Battery in the bolt itself.

Buy if: invisibility is the priority and you don't need a keypad.

Level Lock (Matter) — $249

Same hidden form factor as Level Bolt but with a replaceable exterior trim ring (matte black, satin nickel, polished brass, satin chrome) — you can match your door hardware. Same Thread-based Matter behavior.

Buy if: you want hidden + the option of slightly different exterior aesthetics.

Level Lock Pro / Level Lock+ — $329–$349

Same hidden installation as Level Lock, but adds Apple Home Key — tap your iPhone or Apple Watch on the exterior trim to unlock. The exterior trim contains the NFC reader. Matter over Thread.

Buy if: you want hidden installation AND tap-to-unlock with Apple devices.

The keypad workhorses: codes, fingerprints, the works

Visible smart locks with a keypad, fingerprint reader, or both. The mainstream choice.

Aqara Smart Lock U400 — $269.99

Matter over Thread, Apple Home Key, fingerprint, touchscreen keypad, rechargeable battery (not AA batteries — USB-C charging). UWB-enabled, which means hands-free unlock when your phone is close. Works with Home Assistant. Available in black or silver.

Buy if: you want everything (fingerprint, keypad, Home Key, auto-unlock) in one package, and you appreciate rechargeable batteries.

Kwikset Halo Select Plus — $329

Touchscreen keypad, Apple Home Key, tap-to-unlock, Wi-Fi + Matter (no Thread), door status sensor, intrusion detection. Premium Kwikset.

Buy if: you want a polished, mainstream-brand lock with Apple Home Key and don't need Thread.

Kwikset Halo Select — $279

The non-"Plus" version. Wi-Fi + Matter, keypad, geofence auto-unlock, no Home Key. BHMA Grade AAA certified (the security spec — the rare AAA rating across durability, security, and finish).

Buy if: you want a keypad Kwikset without Apple Home Key, with strong security ratings.

Kwikset Aura Reach — $189

Matter over Thread + Bluetooth. Proximity wakeup, geofence auto-unlock, keypad. The budget Kwikset option that still gets Thread.

Buy if: you want a Kwikset on Thread (better battery life) at a lower price, and can skip the touchscreen and Home Key.

ULTRALOQ Bolt — $179.99

Fingerprint reader, door sensor, Matter over Thread, BHMA Grade AAA certified. Works with Apple Home / Alexa / Google / SmartThings. The price-to-feature ratio is genuinely strong here.

Buy if: you want fingerprint unlock at the lowest Matter-over-Thread price on the market.

Yale YRD510 (Ash or Matte Black) — $189.99

Yale's first-generation Matter lock. Keypad, Matter over Thread, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth. Solid mainstream pick from a brand most US locksmiths recognize.

Buy if: you want a no-nonsense keypad lock from a brand your locksmith already supports.

The video / palm-vein experiments: $200–$400

A newer category — smart locks with built-in cameras, doorbells, and "palm vein" biometric recognition (a Lockin and Eufy specialty). These are more all-in-one front-door systems than traditional locks.

Lockin Veno — $199.99

Palm vein recognition, fingerprint, built-in doorbell, IP65 weatherproof. Wi-Fi + Bluetooth + Matter. 7-month battery life.

Lockin Veno Plus — $299.99

The Veno plus a 2K 180° camera and video doorbell. AI motion detection, local storage. No monthly fee.

Lockin Veno Pro — $379.99

The Veno Plus with more storage (32GB built-in) and AI motion detection refinements.

Eufy FamiLock S3 Max — $249.99–$399.99

Palm vein + camera + doorbell. ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 (the top security rating). No monthly fee. Two variants — keypad deadbolt with camera ($249.99), or full keypad + camera + rear video screen ($399.99).

Buy any of these if: you want a smart lock AND a doorbell camera AND don't already have a separate camera setup. Skeptical view: each of these is a less-good lock and a less-good camera than buying them separately. The integrated form factor is the appeal.

The budget option

Anona Holo Smart Lock — $99.99

Wi-Fi + Bluetooth + Matter, keyless entry, auto-lock, anomaly detection, non-destructive installation. The cheapest Matter lock in this catalog.

Buy if: you want Matter compatibility at the lowest possible price and are willing to accept a lesser-known brand.

The luxury option

Baldwin 8220LL — $660.55

A serious deadbolt — Baldwin makes high-end residential hardware. Bluetooth + Matter, no Wi-Fi or Thread direct (uses a bridge). Sold through Baldwin's pro channel as much as Amazon.

Buy if: you have a high-end home, want the Baldwin name, and budget isn't the constraint.

Premium Apple-focused options

Philips Wi-Fi Smart Lock with Handle — $228.99 / $279.99

Two variants (one handle / two handles). Matter over Thread + Wi-Fi + Bluetooth, Apple Home–first design. European-style handle hardware (less common in the US — check fit).

Buy if: you want the Philips name and an Apple-Home-first experience, and your door supports a handle-style lock rather than a deadbolt-only setup.

Decision shortcuts

I just want the best one and I don't want to think about it.

  • Euro profile door, premium → Nuki Smart Lock Ultra
  • Euro profile door, best value → SwitchBot Lock Pro Matter Enabled
  • US deadbolt, want hidden install → Level Lock Pro
  • US deadbolt, want keypad + fingerprint + Home Key → Aqara U400

I want the best fingerprint lock under $200.ULTRALOQ Bolt ($179.99). Matter over Thread, fingerprint, BHMA AAA.

I want Apple Home Key (tap to unlock with iPhone/Apple Watch).Level Lock Pro/Plus, Kwikset Halo Select Plus, Aqara U400, or Nuki Keypad 2 NFC (as accessory to a Nuki lock).

I want the cheapest Matter lock that doesn't feel like a gamble.Kwikset Aura Reach ($189). Mainstream brand, Matter over Thread, real warranty.

I want palm-vein recognition because the future is now.Eufy FamiLock S3 Max or Lockin Veno lineup — or, in Europe, SwitchBot Lock Ultra + Keypad Vision Pro. Just know you're buying a doorbell-camera-lock combo, not a pure lock.

I rent and can't modify the door.Level Bolt or Level Lock (US), Nuki or SwitchBot Lock Pro (Europe) — all retrofit, all leave the outside of your door unchanged.

What to ignore in lock marketing

A few phrases worth treating with skepticism:

  • "No hub required." Technically true for all Matter locks — but you still need a Matter controller (HomePod, Echo, Nest Hub, or even just an iPhone) for remote access. And Thread-based locks need a Thread border router somewhere in your home.
  • "Works with everything." It works with the major Matter controllers. That doesn't mean every feature works on every platform — Apple Home Key only works on Apple devices, geofence auto-unlock depends on the brand's app, etc.
  • "Military-grade encryption." Not a real spec. Look for BHMA certification instead — Grade AAA is the top, Grade 1 (ANSI/BHMA) is the equivalent for ANSI ratings.
  • "AI-powered." Mostly marketing on smart locks. The one place AI actually does something is motion detection on the camera-equipped models.

TL;DR

European Euro-profile doors: Nuki (premium) or SwitchBot (value). Both retrofit over your existing cylinder, both work with Matter.

US deadbolts: about 20 options across four categories — hidden retrofits (Level), mainstream keypads (Aqara, Kwikset, Yale, ULTRALOQ), camera-and-palm-vein combos (Eufy, Lockin), and edge cases (Anona, Baldwin, Philips).

The single most useful filter when shopping is whether you want Matter over Thread (better battery life, requires a Thread border router) or Matter over Wi-Fi (no border router needed, worse battery life). Most of the better 2026 locks are Thread — except in Europe, where the dominant retrofit locks (Nuki, SwitchBot) are Wi-Fi-based.
