A Matter humidifier lets you switch it on, off and change its output from Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings instead of only the brand's app. Before you buy one, know that Matter doesn't have a humidifier device type yet. All three models here are certified as fans, so your smart home app sees a fan, not a humidifier with a humidity target. This guide compares every Matter humidifier we list, based on manufacturer specs, manuals and Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) certification records, not hands-on testing. You can browse them all in our humidifiers category.

GoveeLife Smart Humidifier 2 Lite 6L (H7149)
The H7149 is the largest tank in this guide at 6 liters (1.6 gallons). Govee's manual gives an effective range of 388 sq ft and notes that larger rooms will take longer to humidify. It has a built-in thermo-hygrometer, so Auto Mode can hold humidity close to the level you set without an extra sensor. You can also link it to a separate Govee thermo-hygrometer. Essential oils go in an aroma box, not in the water tank. Govee says to replace the filter every two months and clean the tank and base every two to three days.
The CSA lists the Smart Humidifier 2 Lite 6L as Matter certified (certificate CSA24398MAT43595-24, July 2024) on specification 1.2. It connects over Wi-Fi, with Bluetooth for setup, and its device type is Fan. Govee Home is still where you set target humidity and Auto Mode.
GoveeLife Smart Humidifier Lite 3L (H7140)
The H7140 is a 3-liter ultrasonic humidifier with a top-fill tank and eight mist levels. Govee rates it at 220 ml/h for rooms of 107 to 290 sq ft. Govee says a full tank lasts 6 to 8 hours at the highest setting and up to 25 hours at lower settings. It has a night light and an essential-oil tray. There is no humidity sensor inside. Govee's AutoReflect mode adjusts mist automatically only when you pair it with a Govee thermo-hygrometer.
The CSA certified the Smart Humidifier Lite for Matter in June 2024 (CSA24389MAT43580-24, specification 1.2) as a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth device with the Fan device type. Govee says some of its earlier products can't get Matter because of hardware limits. If you're buying a used or older unit, check that it shows a Matter QR code or setup code.
SwitchBot Evaporative Humidifier
SwitchBot's humidifier uses evaporation instead of ultrasonic mist. SwitchBot says it works with tap water, uses a washable filter and doesn't leave white dust. It has a 4.5-liter tank. SwitchBot's spec table lists four output levels from 200 to 700 ml/h, with noise ratings from under 18 dB at level 1 to under 40 dB at level 4. It is rated for 20 to 30 square meters, about 215 to 323 sq ft. It offers Humidity, Sleep and Auto modes. Auto mode needs a SwitchBot Meter or Hub to read room humidity.
The CSA lists a native Matter 1.4 certificate for the device (CSA254E0MAT46130-24, July 2025) with the Fan device type. Even so, SwitchBot's product page and help center say Matter support requires a SwitchBot hub. The help center lists the Evaporative Humidifier under Matter over Bridge, through the Hub Mini (Matter Enabled), Hub 2, Hub 3 or AI Hub, and currently marks it as a Lab (beta) feature. Plan on buying a hub if you don't already have one.

How Matter handles humidifiers
Matter defines products by device type. The released Matter Device Library has no humidifier device type, so manufacturers certify humidifiers under something close. All three models in this guide use Fan (device type 0x002B), which Matter describes as a device that circulates air. Its core control is the Fan Control cluster, so your controller sees a fan with on/off and a speed or level setting.
What each ecosystem does with a Matter fan:
- Apple Home lists fans among the Matter product categories it supports.
- Google Home supports the Matter Fan device type, using its Fan Control and On/Off clusters, and shows it as a fan.
- Alexa supports Matter fans for on/off and speed control.
- SmartThings doesn't include the standalone Fan device type in its published list of supported Matter device types, so support there may be limited.
The fan type has no humidity setpoint, tank-empty alert, night light or mist mode. You'll still use Govee Home or the SwitchBot app for target humidity, Auto Mode, schedules and water alerts. Matter is mainly useful here for voice control and for putting the humidifier in scenes and automations with your other devices.
That is expected to change. The draft of the next Matter specification, version 1.7 in the project's public spec repository, adds a dedicated Humidity Conditioner device type and a humidistat cluster. It isn't part of a released Matter version yet. Existing humidifiers would also need a firmware update to use it, and none of these brands has announced one.
How to choose a Matter humidifier
Room size and output
Pick a humidifier rated for your room. The SwitchBot is rated for about 215 to 323 sq ft and the H7140 for 107 to 290 sq ft. Govee's manual gives the H7149 a 388 sq ft effective range. A bigger tank runs longer between refills, which helps if you plan to run it overnight or through automations.
Built-in sensor vs separate sensor
Only the H7149 has a built-in humidity sensor. The H7140 and SwitchBot need a separate brand sensor for automatic humidity control: a Govee thermo-hygrometer for the H7140, and a SwitchBot Meter or Hub for the SwitchBot. Because Matter currently exposes these models as fans, humidity-based automations work best in the brand app. You can also add a separate Matter humidity sensor and build the automation in your smart home app.
Wi-Fi vs Thread
All three humidifiers connect over Wi-Fi, and none uses Thread. That means you don't need a Thread border router. You do need a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and a Matter controller for your ecosystem, such as a HomePod or Apple TV, a Nest speaker or display, or an Echo. The SwitchBot also needs a SwitchBot hub to act as its Matter bridge. Our Matter vs Thread vs Zigbee vs Z-Wave explainer covers how these connections differ.
Ultrasonic vs evaporative
The Govee H7140 is an ultrasonic humidifier. The SwitchBot is evaporative, and SwitchBot says it works with tap water without leaving white dust. Whichever type you choose, follow the cleaning and filter schedule in the manual.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Matter humidifier device type?
Not in any released version of Matter yet. Matter humidifiers are currently certified as fans, so Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa show them as fans with on/off and speed. A dedicated Humidity Conditioner device type is in the draft of Matter 1.7, but it hasn't been released.
Can I set a target humidity from Apple Home or Google Home?
Not with these models. Because they appear as fans through Matter, you set target humidity, Auto Mode and schedules in Govee Home or the SwitchBot app. Matter covers turning them on and off and changing the output level.
Do Matter humidifiers need a hub?
The Govee H7140 and H7149 connect to Matter directly over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. You only need a Matter controller such as a HomePod, Nest speaker or display, or Echo. SwitchBot says its Evaporative Humidifier needs a SwitchBot hub (Hub Mini Matter Enabled, Hub 2, Hub 3 or AI Hub) for Matter.
Do I need a Thread border router for a Matter humidifier?
No. All three Matter humidifiers we list use Wi-Fi rather than Thread, so a Thread border router isn't required.
Which Matter humidifier is best for a larger room?
The GoveeLife Smart Humidifier 2 Lite 6L (H7149) has the largest tank at 6 liters and a built-in humidity sensor. Govee's manual gives it a 388 sq ft effective range.
