The fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat works with most 24V systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced air, heat pump and radiant, and Google says no C wire is needed in most homes. It comes with a Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen), so you can set which room the thermostat should keep comfortable at a given time of day. Connectivity is dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) plus Bluetooth, and it is Matter compatible, which lets you add it to Apple Home, Alexa or SmartThings after setup. Installation and setup must be done in the Google Home app, and features such as learning schedules and Adaptive Eco are managed there. It is also sold in Polished Gold and Polished Silver.

Aqara Thermostat Hub W200

The W200 is a 24V thermostat with a 4-inch round touchscreen and built-in temperature, humidity and radar presence sensors. The thermostat itself connects to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings using Matter over dual-band Wi-Fi. With Apple Home it supports Adaptive Temperature and Clean Energy Guidance. It also works as a Thread border router, a Matter controller and a Zigbee hub for Aqara devices, so it can serve as the base of a Thread network if you do not already have one. Aqara lists compatibility with furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, boilers and PTACs. If your wiring has no C wire, Aqara sells a C-wire adapter separately. It does not work with 120V or 240V line-voltage heat.

Honeywell Home X8S

The X8S is the top model in Honeywell Home's Matter-certified X series. It has a 5-inch customizable touchscreen, occupancy and presence detection for Auto Away, and an included wireless Room Sensor with a listed range of up to 200 ft, with support for more sensors. It adds humidity and ventilation control, is ENERGY STAR certified, and can show video and intercom audio from First Alert VX1 and Ring doorbells on its screen. It works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings over Matter. If you do not need the larger screen or doorbell view, the X7B and X7S have a 4.3-inch screen and humidity control. Those models list a C wire as required, so check the wiring requirements for any X-series thermostat before you buy.

Lux TQX

The TQX is a Matter 1.4 certified thermostat that connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. It has a built-in mmWave occupancy sensor and humidity sensor, ships with one battery-powered remote sensor and supports up to five, so it can prioritize the rooms that are actually in use. Lux lists support for conventional systems up to 2 heat/2 cool, heat pumps up to 4 heat/2 cool, PTACs, and 2-pipe or 4-pipe fan coil systems, plus up to two auxiliary outputs for humidification, dehumidification or ventilation. It needs a C wire, but the included Lux Power Bridge can supply power on systems that have both Y and G wires. It is not compatible with 120V or 240V line-voltage heating. More presence options are in occupancy sensors.

This Meross model is a straightforward Matter over Wi-Fi thermostat for conventional heating and cooling, heating-only or cooling-only systems and heat pumps. It requires a C wire and connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. Meross notes that it keeps following its schedule if Wi-Fi drops, and the Meross app adds usage tracking and alerts for filter life and system issues. Through Matter it works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings. It is not suitable for electric baseboard heaters.

Meross Matter Baseboard Thermostat

Most smart thermostats only work with 24V systems. This Meross model is made for 120-240V line-voltage electric heat, such as baseboard, convector and fan-forced heaters, which are common in older homes and apartments. It has a 24/7 schedule, built-in energy monitoring with usage history in the Meross app, and open-window detection that pauses heating. It works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings over Matter. It does not work with 24V HVAC systems, heat pumps or central air. Line-voltage wiring carries mains power, so use an electrician if you are not comfortable doing the installation.

How to choose

Check your wiring first

Look at the wires on your current thermostat before choosing a model. Most central heating and cooling in the US uses low-voltage 24V wiring, which every thermostat here except the Meross baseboard model supports. Thick wires joined with wire nuts, or a thermostat labeled 120V or 240V, mean line-voltage electric heat, which needs a line-voltage thermostat such as the Meross baseboard model. Many smart thermostats also need a C wire for constant power. The Nest works without one in most homes, the Lux TQX includes a Power Bridge, and Aqara sells a C-wire adapter.

Thread vs Wi-Fi

All six thermostats connect over Wi-Fi, so none of them needs a Thread border router to work. Thread still matters for the rest of your home. Thread devices such as sensors, locks and smart plugs form a low-power mesh and need a border router, such as a HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K (Wi-Fi + Ethernet model), Nest Hub (2nd gen) or Echo (4th gen). The Aqara W200 can also act as a Thread border router. See Matter vs Thread vs Zigbee vs Z-Wave for how the protocols fit together, and hubs for border router options.

Ecosystems

Every thermostat here supports Matter, so it can be added to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings, and Matter multi-admin lets one thermostat appear in more than one ecosystem at once. Matter covers the basics such as mode, set point and current temperature. Advanced features, such as Nest learning schedules, Honeywell room sensor priorities or Meross energy history, usually stay in the maker's app. If you mainly use Apple Home, the Aqara W200 adds Adaptive Temperature. If you mainly use Google Home, the Nest has the deepest integration.

Sensors and humidity

Remote room sensors help when the thermostat sits in a hallway that is warmer or cooler than the rooms you use. The Nest, Honeywell X8S and Lux TQX include one. For humidity, the Honeywell X series and Lux TQX can control whole-home humidification equipment. For a single room, a standalone unit from humidifiers is simpler.

Frequently asked questions

Do Matter smart thermostats need a hub?

The thermostats in this guide connect over Wi-Fi, so they only need a Matter controller for your ecosystem, such as a HomePod or Apple TV for Apple Home, a Nest speaker or display for Google Home, or an Echo for Alexa. They do not need a Thread border router.

Does a Matter thermostat need a C wire?

Many do. The Meross 24V model and the Honeywell Home X7 models list a C wire as required. The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) works without one in most homes, the Lux TQX includes a Power Bridge for systems with Y and G wires, and Aqara sells a C-wire adapter for the W200.

Which Matter thermostat works with electric baseboard heaters?

Use a line-voltage model such as the Meross Matter Baseboard Thermostat, which supports 120-240V baseboard, convector and fan-forced heaters. Standard 24V smart thermostats, including the other five in this guide, are not compatible with line-voltage heat.
