A Matter smart bulb screws into a regular fixture and works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings without a brand-specific hub in most cases. The main decision is the radio inside: Thread bulbs build a low-power mesh through a border router, while Wi-Fi bulbs connect straight to your router. This guide compares seven Matter-compatible bulbs for US E26 sockets, based on manufacturer specs and listed compatibility, not hands-on testing.
Quick picks
- Best Thread bulb: Nanoleaf Essentials Matter A19, a Thread and Bluetooth color bulb with 2700K to 6500K whites and a CRI of 90 or higher.
- Widest white range: Aqara LED Bulb T2 E26, which covers 2000K to 9000K and can run on Thread or Zigbee.
- Best Wi-Fi bulb with no hub: WiZ A19 Matter bulb, an 800-lumen color bulb that connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and adds SpaceSense motion detection.
- Best for an existing Hue system: Philips Hue A19 White and Color Ambiance, which reaches Matter through the Hue Bridge.
- Best for recessed cans: Govee BR30 Matter bulb, an 850-lumen Wi-Fi flood bulb sized for ceiling cans.
Nanoleaf Essentials Matter A19 (Thread)
The Nanoleaf Essentials A19 is one of the few Matter bulbs that runs on Thread rather than Wi-Fi. Nanoleaf lists 806 lumens on average and 1100 lumens at maximum, 2700K to 6500K tunable white plus 16 million colors, a CRI of 90 or higher and 8.5W power draw. It has no Wi-Fi radio, so you need a Matter controller and a Thread border router to use it in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings. Without one, you can still control it over Bluetooth from the Nanoleaf app. This listing is a 3-pack.
Aqara LED Bulb T2 E26 (Thread or Zigbee)
The Aqara T2 is a dual-protocol bulb. In Thread mode it joins Matter ecosystems directly through a Thread border router. In Zigbee mode it connects through a compatible Aqara hub and unlocks Aqara-only features such as its circadian lighting mode, which Aqara says is not available in Thread mode. Aqara lists 1100 lumens, 2000K to 9000K tunable white, 16 million colors and a CRI above 90. It supports Adaptive Lighting in Apple Home and has a setting to choose whether the light comes back on after a power outage.
Philips Hue A19 White and Color Ambiance
Hue bulbs use Zigbee and Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi or Thread. To use them with Matter you add a Philips Hue Bridge, which then exposes your Hue lights to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings. This 75W-equivalent A19 bulb is rated at 1100 lumens and offers warm-to-cool white and millions of colors. Without a bridge it works over Bluetooth with the Hue app and Alexa or Google voice control, but not with Matter. It makes the most sense if you already have a Hue Bridge or plan to buy several Hue lights.
WiZ A19 Matter Smart Bulb
WiZ bulbs connect directly to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so there is no hub or border router to set up. WiZ lists the 60W-equivalent A19 color bulb at 800 lumens, 2200K to 6500K tunable white, 16 million colors, a CRI of 90 or higher and 8.8W. The WiZ app adds two features you will not find in Matter itself: SpaceSense, which uses two or more WiZ lights in the same room to detect motion, and energy use reports. This listing is a 4-pack.
Tapo L535E Matter Smart Bulb
The Tapo L535E is a Wi-Fi A19 color bulb rated at 1100 lumens, which TP-Link positions as brighter than typical 800-lumen color bulbs. It offers 2500K to 6500K tunable white, millions of colors and 1% to 100% dimming. TP-Link highlights Matter Multi-Admin, so you can add the same bulb to more than one ecosystem, and local control over your home network if the internet goes down. This listing is a 4-pack.
GE Cync A21 Direct Connect Matter Bulb
The Cync Direct Connect A21 is a larger-format color bulb that Cync says replaces a 100W bulb. It connects directly to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with no hub and works through Matter with Alexa, Google, SmartThings and Apple Home. Cync rates it for 15,000 hours. The A21 shape is taller and wider than an A19, so check that it fits your lamp shade or fixture before buying. This listing is a 2-pack.
Govee BR30 Matter Smart Bulb
The Govee BR30 is a flood-style bulb for recessed can lights, track lights and some ceiling fixtures. Govee lists 850 lumens, 2700K to 6500K tunable white and RGBWW color, with 1% to 100% dimming in the app. It runs on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Govee notes it is not compatible with dimmer switches. This listing is a 2-pack, with 4- and 6-packs also in the lights category.

How to choose a Matter smart bulb
Thread vs Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi bulbs such as WiZ, Tapo, Cync and Govee are the simplest to set up: they join your 2.4 GHz network and only need a Matter controller for your ecosystem. The trade-off is that every bulb is another device on your router, which can add up in a house with dozens of lights. Thread bulbs such as the Nanoleaf Essentials and the Aqara T2 in Thread mode form their own mesh network and stay off your Wi-Fi, but they need a Thread border router. Our Matter vs Thread vs Zigbee vs Z-Wave explainer covers the differences in more detail.
Thread border routers
Many people already own one. The Apple HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd gen) and Apple TV 4K (Wi-Fi + Ethernet) act as Thread border routers for Apple Home, the Nest Hub (2nd gen) does the same for Google Home, and the Echo (4th gen) does it for Alexa. See our guide to Matter hubs and Thread border routers if you need one.
Zigbee bulbs and bridges
Philips Hue bulbs and the Aqara T2 in Zigbee mode reach Matter through a bridge rather than connecting directly. A bridge adds one more device, but it keeps a large number of bulbs off your Wi-Fi and gives you the brand's full feature set in its own app.
Ecosystems
All seven bulbs here are listed as Matter compatible, so they can be controlled from Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings once added to a Matter controller. Brand apps still matter for extras such as color effects, motion detection or energy reports, which Matter does not cover.
Bulb shape and wall switches
Check the shape before you buy: A19 is the standard household bulb, A21 is a larger version, and BR30 is a flood bulb for recessed cans. Keep the wall switch for a smart bulb turned on, and do not put smart bulbs on a dimmer switch. If you would rather control lights at the wall, a Matter smart dimmer switch with regular dimmable bulbs is often the better choice.
Frequently asked questions
Do Matter smart bulbs need a hub?
Wi-Fi bulbs such as WiZ, Tapo, GE Cync and Govee only need a Matter controller for your ecosystem, such as a HomePod, Nest speaker or display, or Echo. Thread bulbs such as the Nanoleaf Essentials also need a Thread border router. Philips Hue bulbs need a Hue Bridge to work with Matter.
Are Thread smart bulbs better than Wi-Fi bulbs?
Thread bulbs form their own mesh network and stay off your Wi-Fi, which helps in homes with many smart devices. Wi-Fi bulbs are simpler because they connect directly to your router with no border router. Both work with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings through Matter.
Which devices work as a Thread border router?
The Apple HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd gen) and Apple TV 4K (Wi-Fi + Ethernet), the Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) and the Amazon Echo (4th gen) all include a Thread border router, along with dedicated hubs such as Aqara and SmartThings models.
Can I use a smart bulb with a dimmer switch?
It is not recommended. Dimming the power to a smart bulb can cause flicker or make it drop offline, and Govee states its BR30 bulb is not compatible with dimmer switches. Leave the switch on and dim the bulb from its app or your smart home platform.
Do Philips Hue bulbs work with Matter?
Yes, through the Philips Hue Bridge. The bulbs themselves use Zigbee and Bluetooth, and the bridge exposes them to Matter so they can be added to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings.
