A Matter smart dimmer switch replaces a regular wall switch and lets you dim the lights from Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings while the wall control keeps working for everyone in the house. This guide compares seven Matter dimmers for standard 120V US wiring, including Thread and Wi-Fi models, a no-neutral option and a module that hides behind your existing switch. Picks are based on manufacturer specs and listed compatibility, not hands-on testing.

Quick picks

  • Best all-round Wi-Fi dimmer: Leviton Decora Smart D26HD, rated for up to 300W of LED lighting, with wired or wire-free 3-way companions.
  • Best for power users: Inovelli Smart Dimmer, a Matter over Thread dimmer with an RGB notification bar, multi-tap scenes and no-neutral support.
  • Best for homes without a neutral wire: Aqara Dimmer Switch H2 US, which works with or without a neutral and runs on Thread or Zigbee.
  • Best for an existing 3-way circuit: GE Cync Paddle Dimmer, which supports single-pole, 3-way and 4-way wiring with your existing switches.
  • Best for keeping your current switch: Shelly Dimmer Gen4 US, a small in-wall module that installs behind the switch you already have.

Leviton Decora Smart Dimmer D26HD

The D26HD is Leviton's second-generation Decora Smart Wi-Fi dimmer. It is rated for 300W of dimmable LED or CFL, 600W incandescent or halogen and 600VA magnetic low voltage, which is a higher LED limit than most dimmers here. It connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with Bluetooth for setup, needs a neutral wire, and works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings through Matter. Leviton's "Off Means Off" design is meant to stop low-wattage LEDs from glowing when the light is off, and schedules are stored on the device so they keep running during an internet outage. It does not work with standard 3-way switches. For multi-location control, pair it with a wired DD00R or DD0SR companion, or a battery-powered DAWDC or DAWSC Anywhere companion that needs no wiring. If you only need on and off, the Leviton D215S is the matching switch.

Inovelli Smart Dimmer (White Series)

The Inovelli White Series dimmer (VTM31-SN) is a Matter certified dimmer that connects over Thread. It is rated for 600W incandescent, 300W LED and 150W CFL, and supports both leading and trailing edge dimming. A neutral wire is recommended but not required. Without one, Inovelli says you need a bypass at the light fixture, and energy monitoring is not available. Its full-color LED bar can show notifications in Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant, and multi-tap scene control works in Apple Home, Home Assistant and SmartThings. Smart Bulb Mode keeps power going to smart bulbs so they stay online. For 3-way setups it works with Inovelli's Aux Switch, another smart switch or, with a neutral, your existing switch, which then gives on and off but not dimming. Because it uses Thread, it needs a Thread border router.

Eve Dimmer Switch

Eve's dimmer uses Matter over Thread and works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings. It has a hybrid touch and rocker design and is rated for 150W of LED (minimum 3W), 600W incandescent or halogen and 300VA MLV. It needs a neutral wire and a Thread border router. In a 3-way circuit, Eve says it must go in the box where the load wire runs to the light, and the other switch stays a regular switch. As a mains-powered Thread device it also acts as a router that extends your Thread network. The Eve app adds preferred brightness levels, LED status settings and on-device schedules. It is also sold as a 2-pack, and the Eve Light Switch is the on/off version.

Aqara Dimmer Switch H2 US

The H2 US is a rotary dial dimmer that works with or without a neutral wire, which makes it one of the few Matter dimmers suited to older homes. It supports Thread for Matter, so it works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings through a Thread border router, or Zigbee if you have an Aqara hub. It is rated for 360W incandescent or halogen and 240W of dimmable LED, CFL or ELV, and you can switch between leading and trailing edge dimming. Aqara lists a minimum load of 9W on Matter platforms other than Aqara Home, so a single small LED bulb may be too little. Power monitoring and Thread routing only work when a neutral is connected, and the switch does not support wired 3-way control.

GE Cync Paddle Dimmer

The Cync Paddle Dimmer connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with Bluetooth and needs no hub. Through Matter it works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings. GE rates it for 150W LED or 450W incandescent or halogen. It needs a neutral wire, and it supports single-pole, 3-way and 4-way circuits with your existing traditional switches, so one smart dimmer can make the whole circuit smart without replacing every switch. The paddle design suits homes that already use Decora-style rocker switches.

Tapo S505D Matter Dimmer Switch

The S505D is a straightforward single-pole Matter over Wi-Fi dimmer. It connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, uses Bluetooth only for setup, needs a neutral wire and is UL certified. TP-Link rates it for 150W of TRIAC-dimmable LED and 300W incandescent or halogen, using leading edge dimming. Through Matter it works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings, and the Tapo app adds energy tracking, schedules and an away mode. It is not compatible with 3-way wiring. TP-Link suggests a Tapo Smart Button with a Tapo hub for control from a second spot. It also comes as a 2-pack, and the Kasa Matter dimmer 3-pack is a similar single-pole option.

Shelly Dimmer Gen4 US

The Shelly Dimmer Gen4 US is not a wall switch. It is a small module that fits in the wall box behind your existing switch or button, so you keep the switch style you already have. It supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Zigbee, uses Matter by default and can be switched to a Zigbee profile instead. Shelly rates it for 150W of dimmable LED and 200W incandescent or halogen, using trailing edge dimming, and its knowledge base lists a neutral wire as required. It measures power use, runs schedules locally and has a local web interface, which appeals to Home Assistant users. Because it sits in the wall box next to the switch, check that there is room before you buy.

How to choose

Check for a neutral wire

Open the switch box (with the breaker off) and look for a bundle of white wires tied together at the back. That is usually the neutral. Most smart dimmers here need one. If you do not have a neutral, the Aqara H2 US works without one, and the Inovelli dimmer works without one if you add a bypass at the light fixture. Homes built from the mid-1980s on usually have neutrals in switch boxes.

Single-pole or 3-way

If one light is controlled from two places, you have a 3-way circuit. The GE Cync dimmer works with your existing traditional switches, and the Eve dimmer works in 3-way setups when installed on the load side. Leviton needs its own wired or wire-free companion, and Inovelli works with its Aux Switch or, with a neutral, a standard switch. The Tapo S505D and Aqara H2 US are single-pole only.

Load and bulb type

Add up the wattage of the bulbs on the circuit and compare it to the LED limit, not the incandescent limit. LED limits range from 150W to 300W across this list. Use bulbs marked dimmable, and avoid putting smart bulbs on a smart dimmer unless it has a smart bulb mode like the Inovelli. For lamps rather than ceiling lights, a plug-in model from dimmers avoids wiring altogether.

Thread vs Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi dimmers such as the Leviton, GE Cync and Tapo connect straight to your router and need no extra hardware besides a Matter controller. Thread dimmers such as the Inovelli, Eve and Aqara keep devices off your Wi-Fi and form a low-power mesh, and mains-powered Thread switches can extend that mesh. They need a Thread border router, such as a HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K (Wi-Fi + Ethernet model), Nest Hub (2nd gen) or Echo (4th gen). See Matter vs Thread vs Zigbee vs Z-Wave for how the protocols fit together, and hubs for border router options.

Ecosystems

Every dimmer here supports Matter, so it can be added to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings, and Matter multi-admin lets one dimmer show up in more than one of them. Matter covers on, off and brightness. Extras such as fade rates, LED bar colors, energy history and dimming calibration usually stay in the maker's app. Matter also does not change how the wiring works, so the neutral and 3-way limits above apply in every ecosystem.

Frequently asked questions

Do Matter dimmer switches need a neutral wire?

Most do. The Leviton D26HD, Eve, GE Cync, Tapo S505D and Shelly Dimmer Gen4 US all list a neutral wire as required. The Aqara Dimmer Switch H2 US works with or without a neutral, and the Inovelli Smart Dimmer works without one if you add a bypass at the light fixture.

Do Matter dimmer switches need a hub?

Wi-Fi models such as the Leviton, GE Cync and Tapo only need a Matter controller for your ecosystem, such as a HomePod, Nest speaker or display, or Echo. Thread models such as the Inovelli, Eve and Aqara also need a Thread border router, which is built into the HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K (Wi-Fi + Ethernet), Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Echo (4th gen).

Can I use a Matter smart dimmer in a 3-way circuit?

Some models can. The GE Cync Paddle Dimmer works with your existing switches in 3-way and 4-way circuits, and the Eve Dimmer Switch works in a 3-way when installed where the load wire runs to the light. Leviton and Inovelli need their own companion or aux switches for full multi-way dimming. The Tapo S505D and Aqara H2 US are single-pole only.

Can I put smart bulbs on a smart dimmer switch?

Generally no, because dimming the power to a smart bulb can make it flicker or drop offline. Control smart bulbs from their own app instead. The Inovelli Smart Dimmer has a Smart Bulb Mode that keeps constant power to the bulbs while the switch sends dimming commands.

Can one Matter dimmer work with Apple Home and Alexa at the same time?

Yes. Matter supports multi-admin, so you can share a dimmer from one ecosystem to another and control it from both.

How many LED bulbs can a smart dimmer handle?

Add up the wattage of the bulbs and compare it to the dimmer's LED limit. That is 300W for the Leviton D26HD and Inovelli, 240W for the Aqara H2 US and 150W for the Eve, GE Cync, Tapo S505D and Shelly Dimmer Gen4 US.
