A motion sensor turns the lights off when you sit still for too long. A presence sensor uses mmWave radar to notice small movements like breathing, so it can tell a quiet room from an empty one. These are the Matter presence sensors in our US catalog, with the specs and setup details that decide which one fits your room.

Aqara Presence Multi-Sensor FP300
The FP300 combines 60 GHz mmWave radar with a PIR sensor, so it can catch both walking and sitting still, and it adds light, temperature and humidity readings in the same small cube. Aqara rates the detection range at up to about 20 feet (6 m) with a 120 degree field of view. It runs on two replaceable CR2450 coin cells, which Aqara rates for up to 2 years in Thread mode and up to 3 years in Zigbee mode.
You choose the radio. In Thread mode it pairs directly to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant through a Thread border router, with no Aqara hub. In Zigbee mode it needs an Aqara hub, which unlocks more settings in the Aqara Home app and still bridges to Matter. Aqara notes that the light sensor isn't exposed in Alexa.
Buy it if you want one battery-powered sensor per room that can run lights and climate automations without a cable.
Meross MS605 Smart Presence Sensor
The MS605 is the battery version of Meross's presence sensor. It pairs 24 GHz mmWave radar with PIR and a light sensor, runs on one CR123A battery that Meross rates for up to 3 years, and has an IP67 rating with an operating range of -4 to 140 F. That makes it one of the few presence sensors in this list that Meross positions for humid bathrooms, basements and attics.
Meross rates motion detection at up to about 20 feet (6 m) and stationary presence at up to about 13 feet (4 m). In the Meross app you can split the detection area into three zones, and each zone appears as its own sensor on Matter platforms. It's Matter over Thread, so it needs a Thread border router, but it doesn't need a Meross hub. Setup in the Meross app is over Bluetooth. Meross recommends mounting it on a wall about 4 to 6 feet up, aimed at where a seated person's chest would be.
Buy it if the room is damp or unheated, or you want zone sensors without running a cable.
Aqara Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400
The FP400 is a wired mmWave spatial sensor, powered over USB-C (5V, 1A), with an IPX5 rating. It can track up to 10 people and supports up to 8 custom zones on a fine grid, so one sensor can tell the sofa from the dining table. It also reports light level.
The zones are the reason to buy it, and they come with a setup condition. Aqara says the custom zones are configured in the Aqara Home app with an Aqara hub, and then shared to other Matter platforms as one whole-area sensor plus up to 8 zone sensors. Pair it directly to Apple Home or Google Home without Aqara Home and you get only the single whole-area occupancy sensor. It supports Matter over Thread and Zigbee.
Buy it if you have an open-plan living space and want separate automations for different parts of the room, and you're fine using the Aqara app for setup.
Shelly Presence Gen4
Shelly's presence sensor uses 60 to 64 GHz mmWave radar, connects over Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth and Zigbee, and supports Matter over Wi-Fi. That means no Thread border router is required. It can detect up to 6 people and supports up to 10 configurable zones. Shelly rates wall-mount coverage at 140 degrees horizontally over an area of about 26 by 26 feet (8 x 8 m), and still-person detection at up to about 10 feet (3 m).
It needs constant power from a 5V, 1A USB-C supply, and Shelly recommends a dedicated adapter rather than a multi-port charger. On Matter, one zone is visible by default, and each extra zone you add appears as a separate component. It also has a local web interface, scripting and MQTT for people who run Home Assistant. It's sold in black and white.
Buy it if you don't have a Thread border router, or you want many zones and local control options.
Meross MS600 Smart Presence Sensor
The MS600 is the wired, Wi-Fi version of the Meross sensor. It combines 24 GHz mmWave with PIR and a light sensor, and runs from a USB-C power adapter that's included in the box with a 1.5 m cable. Meross rates presence detection at up to about 20 feet (6 m), and motion at up to about 39 feet (12 m) when you switch on its security mode in the app.
Because it's Matter over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, it pairs to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings without a Thread border router. The box also includes a pet shield and cable clips.
Buy it if you have an outlet nearby and want the longest motion range on Wi-Fi.
Lafaer LWR01 Wireless Human Presence Sensor
The LWR01 from Lafaer, a GL.iNet brand, is a Matter-over-Thread mmWave sensor that runs on two AA batteries or USB-C power. GL.iNet lists presence detection at up to about 11.5 feet (3.5 m) and motion at up to about 20 feet (6 m), with an IPX3 rating and an operating range of 32 to 104 F. GL.iNet claims more than a year of battery life.
Buy it if you want a Thread presence sensor that takes AA batteries, or the option to plug it in later.
SwitchBot Presence Sensor
SwitchBot's sensor uses 60 GHz mmWave radar plus PIR and a light sensor, runs on two AAA batteries that SwitchBot rates for up to 2 years, and has a 120 degree field of view. SwitchBot rates detection at up to about 26 feet (8 m) for moving people and about 16 feet (5 m) for people sitting still.
The sensor itself uses Bluetooth. To reach Matter it needs a SwitchBot hub with Matter bridging: the Hub Mini Matter Enabled, Hub 2, Hub 3 or AI Hub. Without a hub it can still trigger other SwitchBot devices directly.
Buy it if you already have a SwitchBot hub at home.
Aqara Presence Sensor FP1E
The FP1E is Aqara's earlier wired mmWave sensor. It uses 60 GHz radar on Zigbee, with presence detection at up to about 20 feet (6 m), and is powered at 5V, 1A through a USB-A cable. It reaches Matter only through an Aqara hub such as the M3, M200 or M100, which bridges it to Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa.
Buy it if you already run an Aqara hub and want a wired sensor that stays on that Zigbee network.

How to choose a Matter presence sensor
Presence or motion. A PIR motion sensor only reacts to movement. A presence sensor adds mmWave radar, which picks up small movements such as breathing, so the lights don't switch off while you're reading or working at a desk. If you only need a hallway light to turn on, a cheaper motion sensor is often enough.
Thread or Wi-Fi. Battery-powered presence sensors in this list (FP300, MS605, LWR01) use Matter over Thread, which uses little power but needs a Thread border router. Common border routers include the HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Echo (4th gen). Wired sensors on Wi-Fi (Shelly Presence Gen4, Meross MS600) don't need one, but they need an outlet. Our hubs and Thread border routers guide covers the options, and Matter vs Thread vs Zigbee explains how the radios relate.
Battery or wired. Battery sensors go anywhere, including ceilings and corners with no outlet. Wired sensors tend to have more zones and longer ranges, and you never change a battery.
Zones. If one room has several areas, such as a desk and a sofa, zones let you run different automations from one sensor. The Shelly Presence Gen4 (up to 10), Aqara FP400 (up to 8) and Meross MS605 (3) all expose zones as separate sensors on Matter, but each one needs its own app for the initial zone setup.
Ecosystems. All of these work with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings through Matter, though not every extra reading is supported everywhere. Aqara and Meross both note that Alexa doesn't show the light sensor. Detailed settings like radar sensitivity usually stay in the maker's app or Home Assistant.
Placement. mmWave radar can be thrown off by fans, swaying curtains and plants. Aim the sensor at where people sit, not at a window or a ceiling fan.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a presence sensor and a motion sensor?
A motion sensor uses PIR to detect heat moving across its view, so it can miss someone sitting still. A presence sensor adds mmWave radar, which detects small movements such as breathing, so it can tell that a room is still occupied when nobody is walking around.
Do Matter presence sensors need a hub?
Every Matter device needs a Matter controller, such as a HomePod, Apple TV, Nest Hub or Echo. Thread sensors like the Aqara FP300, Meross MS605 and Lafaer LWR01 also need a Thread border router, which many of those controllers include. Wi-Fi sensors like the Shelly Presence Gen4 and Meross MS600 don't need a border router. The SwitchBot Presence Sensor and Aqara FP1E only reach Matter through their brand's hub.
Are there battery-powered mmWave presence sensors?
Yes. The Aqara FP300 runs on two CR2450 cells, the Meross MS605 on one CR123A, the Lafaer LWR01 on two AA batteries and the SwitchBot Presence Sensor on two AAA batteries. Battery life depends on settings and how busy the room is, so the manufacturer ratings are a best case.
Which Matter presence sensors support zones?
The Shelly Presence Gen4 supports up to 10 zones, the Aqara Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400 up to 8 and the Meross MS605 up to 3. In each case you set the zones up in the maker's app, and each zone then appears as its own occupancy sensor in Apple Home, Google Home or another Matter platform.
Do Matter presence sensors work with Apple Home?
Yes. Every sensor in this guide can be added to Apple Home over Matter, either directly or through its brand's hub. Thread models need a Thread border router such as a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K.
