Shelly Wall Display firmware 2.8 adds Matter controller
Announced Shelly
Shelly has released Wall Display firmware 2.8.0 on its stable channel, announced in the Shelly community on October 18, 2026 (the post says version 2.8.4 is the current build). On newer Wall Display models, the display can now act as a Matter controller: you enter a device's Matter setup code to add it, and a device that isn't on Wi-Fi yet is guided onto the network over Bluetooth. Added devices get dashboard tiles for lights, covers and shades, thermostats and air conditioners, fans, robot vacuums and microwave ovens, and Matter sensors show temperature, humidity, occupancy and air quality readings.
Shelly says Thread devices aren't supported natively yet. They need their own hub, which can then share them with the Wall Display through Matter. Devices added through the display can also be shared with Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings or the maker's own app using a temporary pairing code. The original Wall Display and Wall Display X2 can't add Matter devices themselves, but they can use devices shared from a newer model. Cloud control of these devices in the Shelly app will require a Premium subscription, and Shelly lists it as still to be announced.
The update also lets the Wall Display be added to other Matter platforms as a device. It exposes its relay or dimmer output, its presence sensor, a paired Shelly BLU H&T sensor and its room thermostat. Shelly notes that Matter certification is still in progress for the Wall Display X2i, X1i and D1, so platforms may warn that those models are uncertified when you add them.
